Scotland 2022 - Day 0: Heading North

Wow, today has really crept up on us! After watching England win the Euros at Wembley on Sunday and then a trip to Birmingham for the Commonwealth Games on Monday it would have been a busy week without also having to get ready for a holiday, whilst at the same time having our ensuite at the new house ripped out. But that has been this week and I'm glad to say we made our planned train from High Wycombe and we're now just passing Rugby on the Caledonian Sleeper to Inverness.

We started planning this holiday early in the New Year and then up until the last few weeks it really had been on the back burner.  If all goes to plan we'll be arriving in the Highland capital of Inverness in time for breakfast and have a morning planned exploring the city before picking up our motorhome early in the afternoon. After a trip to a supermarket to pick up supplies we'll then head south to Loch Ness in search of the elusive monster and our first night in our hotel on wheels.

Sunday will see us meet up with Jana, Petr and family as we start our trip along the famous North Coast 500 taking in the East, North and West coasts of the Highlands.  Later on we plan to head to Skye and then fingers crossed a trip on the Jacobite "Harry Potter" steam train, but with an RMT strike planned, that's now looking unlikely.

We'll finish off the trip with a few nights in Aviemore, somewhere I stayed many, many years ago on a Juler family holiday with my parents and sister. That was also a trip by train, but ended up being a disaster due to overrunning engineering works, so hopefully we'll be more successful tonight on the sleeper!

We'll aim to update the blog most nights, but wifi/4G might not be the best in places, so we'll see how we get on.
